Description

Justice matters, yet there are approximately 86% of civil legal needs among the poor which are often unmet or inadequate, as reported by the Legal Services Corporation. Also equally disappointing is that the Legal Services Corporation reports that 1.7 million low-income Americans will reach out to the organization seeking legal help with their civil legal problems, but half will be turned away*, included in this number are low-income individuals and families living in the Mid-Missouri region, and those who are lost in the justice gap.

Black Women with Voices, or BMV recognized this need and decided that it was time to close the gap, and ensure that access to justice is opened to all regardless of one's ability to pay , social, cultural or racial background. Black Women with Voices is a nonprofit organization aimed at ending acts of violence, including domestic and intimate partner violence against African American women and girls, and building strong, healthy and peaceful families within the Mid-Missouri African American communities and communities at large. The BWV Legal Outreach Clinic has partnered with the Gospel Justice Iniative to transform lives by serviving the legal and spiritual needs of our community's most vulnerable citizens, regardless of race, sexual orientation, economic status, religion or cultural background.

Unlike traditional legal aid programs, we support and encourage the use of prayer, and promote justice through legal representation and legal education for our low-income neighbors as a way of demonstrating Christ's love. Without volunteers and Good Samaritans, this is not possible. Justice requires community. We partner with churches, businesses, agencies and communities to address the legal needs of vulnerable citizens. We are planning our first legal clinic soon and will be holding our first layman volunteer training and would love for you to join us. Our volunteers positions will train you on how to serve the legal and spiritual needs of our community. No formal legal education is required, just a heart for justice, compassion, love and mercy. Volunteer positions will include attorneys, prayer champions, client advocates, hospitality and intake specialists, to name a few. Please RSVP by September 15th, 2017. Please feel to contact Cheryl Miller at 573-514-3113 for further questions. The first training is limited to 15 participants.
