Description

Join Martha Jurchak, PhD, RN for some coffee on November 16th. Martha is executive director of the Ethics Service at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and ethics consultant at South Shore Hospital. She co-chairs the Brigham’s Ethics Committee and manages the 24/7 ethics consultation service (Ethics Service), a multidisciplinary service open to assist patients, their families and staff in situations of ethical conflict and stress. Working in the field of clinical ethics since 1985, Martha, who joined the Brigham in 1999, has written and published several pieces about clinical ethics in many publications, including The Journal of Clinical Ethics, The American Journal of Bioethics, and the Hastings Center Report. In addition, she has spoken at national and international conferences about clinical ethics. She has been recognized for her contributions in clinical ethics by the Boston Business Journal and Boston College Connell School of Nursing. Martha has taught ethics at the Massachusetts General Hospital Institute for Health Professions, Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences and the Division of Medical Ethics at Harvard Medical School, where she holds a faculty position as instructor. Since 2015, Martha and her team have worked to educate colleagues about clinical ethics through BWH Clinical Ethics Case Review, an electronic newsletter that highlights a real case that posed an ethical problem for a patient, family members and/or caregivers, leading to an ethics consultation. Martha is currently interested in using simulation and improvisation to teach ethics consultation in a clinical setting.

Come ask questions and learn about her role in the hospital, as well as her career path, and advice for young professionals.

Registration is required and will be first come, first served.

Refreshments will be provided.
