Event description

The Butte County Department of Behavioral Health - Prevention Services will be hosting the 17th Annual COMMITTED Youth Development Summit on October 5th at the Youth with a Mission Conference Grounds in Richardson Springs.

One of the most impactful sessions of this conference is the Community Leader World Cafe. Please mark your calendars for Thursday, October 5th from 10:30am-2:30pm at the Youth with a Mission Conference Grounds in Richardson Springs.

During the Community Leader World Café, youth participants will join adult leaders to share experiences and perspectives in addressing important youth issues including reducing underage drinking, improving school climate, and promoting emotional health in young people. We are aiming to increase the dialogue between youth and adults and recognize the value of your experience, knowledge and history. We will use the information gathered at the World Cafe to create community recommendations, identify needed services to better support young people and gain momentum for initiatives young people are preparing to launch during this school year.

The Community Leader World Cafe will begin at 10:30am and end at 2:30pm on Thursday, October 5th.

Over 100 community leaders participated in the World Cafe last year. Together, the adult and youth participants reviewed community assessment data collected from over 1,500 local high school students. Community leaders and youth created recommendations to address important youth issues. Many of the recommendations presented at the World Cafe have been successfully implemented throughout Butte County.

We appreciate your commitment to participating in this event. I know you will find this experience to be a unique opportunity to join other community leaders in empowering young people to create solutions!

Community leaders from past World Cafes provided the following comments and reflections:

"I think it is very courageous of these students to show up and talk openly about these issues"

"I was overwhelmed at how eager all these students were to speak to me & ask me for my opinion!"

"I had a terrific time at the Youth Summit. I made several connections with different students in my own Biggs community and in the Oroville, Gridley, and Chico communities"

"The students were very serious and had many ideas for reducing alcohol-related issues. I think they were realistic that they are not going to stop all underage drinking, but have to be responsible for themselves and hopefully that will rub off on their peers."

"These are the leaders of tomorrow. They are the people who will be taking over our positions someday. They deserve our time and attention."

"I was very impressed with the young people who spoke to us. Their values were great, such as love, honesty, faith, wisdom, peace of mind. Like I told the students, the experience taught me to spend more time listening to young people instead of always trying to teach them. We should be more interactive and listen to their voices, thoughts, and experiences. They shared a lot of wisdom and enthusiasm. It was an inspirational experience. Thank you!"

"Thank you for the opportunity to hear from students. They were very honest and open in all my conversations. I felt commissioned to spread their message to my community to do all their work justice."

"I loved the event. I'm truly amazed with the commitment and strength of the students and look forward to seeing what they can accomplish. (And of course helping them!)"

"I am encouraged by the young people and their ideas. I want to support them in implementing their ideas. They inspired me!"

We look forward to your participation in this exciting opportunity! Our goal is to ensure that every high school student has at least one caring, supportive adult to connect with.
