The rise of Business Partnering

As organisations attempt to cope with ever increasing scale and pace of change the ability to have a well designed, effective and fully functioning organisation is ever more critical. Time and effort wasted on internal battles between business units and divisions within an organisation literally cost the organisation money.

Business Partnering at a glance - Definition

Business Partnering is a term coined by Dave Ulrich in his book Human Resource Champions, 1997. In a nut shell Business Partnering is:

“…the suite of skills, behaviours and attitude that enables us to build long term win-win relationships, which are based on mutual trust and team work and result in sharing the risks and rewards.”

Business Partnering is not about taking orders, nor is it about a servant relationship. Each part of the business has its role to play. No one part of the business is any more or less important than the other.

We use the term ‘Business Partner’ holistically to mean the suite of roles one must be adept at adopting, as the situation requires it.
