Session One: Negotiating with Referrers

Studios generate new instructions from a variety of sources including advertising, word of mouth and repeat business; however, an increasing number of practices are turning to commercial referrers (including consultants, agents and professional business networks) to develop additional streams of work. What do architects need to consider when negotiating contracts with such referrers?

In this workshop, solicitors from Stone King’s corporate & commercial team will share their recent experience of helping their architect clients to establish, negotiate and manage commercial relationships with referrers.

Attendees can expect to:

1. learn about additional ways to diversify their work streams by working with referrers;

2. gain a better understanding of how to future-proof these relationships; and

3. learn how to equip themselves when approaching (or being approached by) referrers.

Session Two: Tips to Grow Your Architectural Practice

Architectrual practices are often established by two or more professionals who share a common vision for what they want to achieve and how they want to achieve it. But one of the first issues facing those that wish to start a new business is how to fund it and how to structure the equity fairly in order to best reflect the financial and non-financial contributions to be made by each partner.

Some of the more practical conundrums faced by growing practices include: where to base their studio, how to brand and market the business, when to engage additional staff and how to cater for different creative dynamics. Solving each of these issues requires a degree of legal input.

Solicitors from Stone King’s corporate & commercial team will discuss the key steps that architects should take to preserve their relationship with partners and protect themselves from personal liability.

Attendees can expect to:

1. learn they key issues that ought to be addressed in a shareholder agreement, or partnership agreement;

2. understand the different ways in which they can raise working capital;

3. learn about the ways they can protect themselves personally from the risks of their business; and

4. gain a better understanding of alternative ways to incentive staff, other than offering target related bonuses.
