Event description

Description

Celtic culture fans will gather to celebrate the 259th birthday of brilliant poet and songwriter, bad boy, and man of the people, Scottish national poet Robert Burns on Saturday, January 20, 2018 in Greenwich, Connecticut. On or near January 25 every year, the Scots celebrate the birthday of their beloved bard, most famous for writing “Auld Lang Syne,” with dinner, music, poetry, and a wee dram.

Scottish flagsThe Greenwich Pipe Band will be playing at the event as will Stefanie Kies, who has wowed the audience the last two years with beautiful renditions of Burns’ songs.

Who Was Robert Burns?

Burns’ influence on American writers and songwriters is deeper than many realize. The 2016 winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature, Bob Dylan has acknowledged that "A Red, Red Rose" was his single most important inspiration; John Steinbeck got the title for “Of Mice and Men” from "To a Mouse;" J. D. Salinger’s inspiration for the title “Catcher in the Rye” was Burns’ “Comin’ Through the Rye.”

Greenwich Pipe Band

Break out your tartan, polish your “Braveheart” brogue, and come join the fun to celebrate the Ploughman Poet at this new Greenwich tradition.

Even if you have no Scottish connection, this is a fun way to shake off the midwinter blues.

The organizer attended the University of Edinburgh, so the university is inviting area alumni. She is a member of the Greenwich Pen Women--a local branch of the national organization for creative women--so there will be professional writers, artists, and musicians in attendance. And she's a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Greenwich: If you haven't been, you will be wowed by its architectural splendor.

FAQs

Tell me about the venue

This venue is literally two blocks from the previous one. It's in central Greenwich, at the corner of Route 1 and Lafayette Place. There's parking in the church lot (there are handicapped spaces), on the street, and in the large municipal lot behind the church on Lafayette Place. The church is at the top of Greenwich Avenue (look for the big, white steeple) and is in walking distance to the Greenwich Metro-North train station.

We will not be in the sanctuary: There's a lovely event space as you enter on the right called Fellowship Hall. This is not a religious event. However, it is of interest to note that the Presbyterian Church has strong Scottish ties.

Can I sing a Burns song, read a Burns poem, or make a toast or a speech?

Yes! Participation is very welcome. Please let the organizer know how you'd like to be involved.

How can I contact the organizer with any questions?

Stasha Healy stashahealy [at] gmail [dot] com (The email address is written this way to prevent spambots; please write it in the usual way if you are contacting her.)

What's the refund policy?

Full refund if seven days in advance (January 15).

Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?

No. When you RSVP through Eventbrite your name is automatically added to the guest list.

Is my registration fee or ticket transferrable?

Yes. Just let the organizer know what name you'd like your ticket/s under.

Are there age restrictions?

This is an adults-only event. Child care might be available on site for a fee if enough guests express interest.

Is this a religious event?

No. It is being held at a church for a number of reasons (including connection to the organizer, central location, and price). People of all (and no) faiths are welcome. Everyone is welcome. Invite friends!
