Burning Rocks - Thermal Remediation of Bedrock in Germany (hosted by AECOM)
Description: The presence of solvent contamination in groundwater within hard rock geology can limit the technologies which are suitable for its remediation. This is particularly the case in southwest Germany where sandstone geology is present in many areas and is often an important drinking water resource. In situ thermal remediation provides options to achieve high temperatures in bedrock to vaporize solvents for extraction. Contaminant levels can thereby be reduced to a level where further degradation by other natural processes can occur.
AECOM will give an overview of potential thermal remediation technologies and the decision-making process for selection (including the advantages and limitations of the technologies), followed by a project example of how the process can be used.
