Burnham of Chicago in Manila, a Presentation by Dr. Dennis H. Cremin
Thu, May 4, 2017, 6:30 PM – 8:30 PM CDT
The Gaylord Building invites you to an entertaining, illustrated presentation entitled: “Burnham of Chicago in Manila” by Dennis H. Cremin. Cremin, professor of history at Lewis University, will discuss Burnham background and his plans of 1905 for Manila and Baguio in the Philippines. He will draw on his book, Grant Park: The Evolution of Chicago’s Front Yard and reflect on his experiences as the keynote speaker at the Heritage Manila, Heritage Cities Forum Series, in Manila, Philippines. The two-day Historic Preservation forum was held February 8-9, 2017 at De La Salle University, a Lasallian partner of Lewis University.
Burnham presented his grand plan for Manila and Baguio in 1905. These plans were only partially realized due to political and cultural changes that included World War II. More than a hundred years later, only a few parts of his plan were realized. “My presentation emphasizes Burnham’s historical context and his architectural vision, which continues to captivates us to this day,” said Cremin. Today, with over 50% of the world’s populations living in large cities, we continue to try to balance the challenge of economic development and heritage conservation.
Tickets include Dr. Cremin's presentation as well as a delicious meal catered by the Public Landing Restaurant including salad, pretzel rolls, pot roast, penne pasta, green beans and garlic mashed potatoes.
Doors open at 6:30, Presentation begins at 7:00PM.
