About this event

Burlington Poetry Feedback Workshop (formally called: Burlington Poetry Workshop) gathers every 1st & 3rd Thursday online at 6:30 EST (eastern time)

We are a diverse gathering of published and budding poets who read and then give editing feedback on three poems of the day, making comments on impact, form, poetics, tone, message, etc. We share what works in the poem, and then what other techniques might be used to help polish the poem further.

'BWW Poetry Workshop' is a great way to grow in one's own rewriting practice and deepen your writing skills through understanding poetry in new ways. It also helps prepare individual poems for publication for the poet who is already published, or ready to be published for the first time.

Before requesting to have your own poem workshopped, please attend at least one group meeting. If after you've attended a full workshop session, you want to share a poem, go HERE to post your poem. Once there are three posting for our workshop, those will be the poems of the day.

Hosts:

Jim Wyman is the last full-time resident on a one-lane, dirt, dead-end road at the tip of a long peninsula in the middle of a very large lake. He was born and raised in the foothills of the Longfellow Range of the Appalachian Mountains in western Maine. He moved to Vermont in 1981. Here, he continues to appreciate the vibrant colors of woods, fields, and hills and the cold black and white of winter which are often subjects of his poetry.

He joined BWW in 2018 as a member of the “Poetry Feedback Workshop” where he continues to share his passion for poetry. Jim teaches at the Community College of Vermont. His poetry has been published in "Pegasus," “Poem City,” Burlington Free Press, “The Poetry Path” BWW, “Maya’s Review: The Closed Eye Open,” and will appear in the March 2024 edition of Ink In Thirds. He is the author of “Picture Perfect Poems” (Lulu.com/shop).

Janet McKeehan-Medina is the current co-chair of BWW. She grew up in Los Angeles and currently lives in New York with her husband. She is a trained psychotherapist and special education consultant. She has always harbored a passion for writing and has incorporated it into her professional and personal life. As a Burlington Writers Workshop member and volunteer, she was able to reconnect with her love for poetry.

CONTENT ADVISORY:

All works in BWW are intended for an adult audience, and may contain language, characters, themes, and content that is offensive or triggering to some readers. If your piece has content that may be upsetting to others, please put the words "Content Advisory" at the top of the piece and the reasons why. For example: "Content Advisory: Graphic violence, depression, & PTSD"

Please note, this is simply a courtesy to all BWW members, so that they can choose whether or not to be exposed to given material, and when. We completely understand no one can catch every possible issue. However, we do ask that you make a good faith effort for the benefit of all members. Better too much info than not enough. This policy is in no way censoring what is written, it is merely a consideration to others.

If you're unfamiliar with this topic, please visit this website for some examples of things that might come up. In general: if you're writing about something that would be harmful physically, mentally, and/or emotionally to others in real life (such as graphic violence), list it as a content advisory.

ZOOM NAME:

For security reasons, please make sure your name on Zoom matches the name you used to sign up for the workshop(s). Adding pronouns is fine (and encouraged)! We just want to make sure we’re able to tell that everyone in the waiting room is signed up for the workshop. :)

*In other words, if we can't tell who you are on Zoom, we will not be letting you in from the waiting room.*

Alternatively, if you are unable to change your Zoom name (and it doesn't match your sign-up name), please use the Contact the Organizer button which name is on your account, so we can see you're supposed to be there.

MEETING: Only folks who register with Burlington Writers Workshop for the session will be given access.

CANCEL: PLEASE cancel your registration by saying you will not attend if you will not be in attendance, so people on the WAIT LIST will be able to fill that seat.
