Event description

Description

The Florida Trail follows the west side of Bull Creek Wildlife Management Area along the old railroad grade. Ties and hardware remain along the route. Pines in the northeast corner of the property still have "catfaces" (areas on trees where iron gutters were attached to harvest the pitch). Additional trailside history includes a small cemetery in Bull Creek, flow wells, and the remains of a turpentine still and sawmill. At the south end, the trail passes through Forever Florida, a working cattle ranch and private nature-oriented resort. Hikers have the opportunity of viewing sandhill cranes and wood storks along with cattle. Bull Creek offers hikers views of scenic creeks, expanses of pine flatwoods and floodplain swamp.

Join the Indian River Chapter to help maintain the Florida National Scenic Trail and side trails in Bull Creek WMA. We will be maintaining approximately 15 miles of trail. Work will include mowing, lopping, blazing, and hand sawing.

Optional camping will be available at the hunt camp located at the end of Crabgrass Creek Road. All meals Friday dinner- Sunday lunch will be provided.

Hiking boots (description below) and long pants are required. Long-sleeve t-shirts are recommended.

This event is a free volunteer opportunity. Join our crew and have fun!
