Event description

Description

Join a panel of experts in conversation about the history of Canada's modern architecture. Topics include the West Coast Modern architecture around Vancouver and the ethos of city-building with nature in mind—a mindset evident in landmarks such as Robson Square and innovative energy-efficient buildings. How did this outlook shape Vancouver's mid-century architecture? Does it still apply to the city's contemporary architecture—and should it?

The panel will include Elsa Lam co-editor of the new book Canadian Modern Architecture, 1967 to the present, and Sherry McKay, a contributing author to the book. It also includes architects James Cheng and John Patkau.

This event is part of the library's "Thinking Forward" event series and is a launch for the book Canadian Modern Architecture, 1967 to the present.

Canadian Modern Architecture, 1967 to the present is a comprehensive review of major work in this county. It includes 15 original essays and 500 photographs and drawings. The book is co-edited by Canadian Architect magazine editor Elsa Lam and architectural historian Graham Livesey. Chapter authors include George Baird, Brian Carter, Ian Chodikoff, Odile Hénault, George Kapelos, Lisa Landrum, Steven Mannell, Sherry McKay, Marco Polo, Lola Sheppard, David Theodore, Larry Wayne Richards, Adele Weder and Mason White.

The 50-year retrospective begins with the nation’s centennial and Expo 67 in Montreal. It covers the defining of national institutions and movements, how Canadian architects interpreted major international trends, regional and Indigenous architectural tendencies, and the influence of architects in Canada’s three largest cities—Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver.

Copies of Canadian Modern Architecture, 1967 to the present will be available for purchase at the event.
