About the Talks

Research = Strategy: How creating research-backed frameworks can drive impact

by Claire Menke

Research sits at the forefront of product strategy. As a function we can be strategic drivers, but how do you make that happen? By integrating foundational research findings into a unified, cohesive framework you can increase your influence and affect change in your organization. But how do you get started? And should research really be leading that charge? Claire will discuss her experience influencing through research, and how constructing frameworks has leveled-up her career.

Amplifying insights from underrepresented users to build more inclusive products

by Nanako Era

What can we, as researchers, do to proactively include and amplify the experiences of underrepresented users who don’t feel a sense of belonging? This talk will look at the gap between how underrepresented users vs. the general population experience products and how this gap can help to guide where efforts should be focused to make products more inclusive. It will dive into case studies, frameworks and best practices we can adopt in research to build better, more inclusive products that aim to provide equal access for everyone, and the ways in which Airbnb is tackling inclusivity at scale.

Claire Menke | Research Manager, Creation and Sharing @Facebook

As the research manager for the Creation team Claire oversees research about how people create content and share with friends and family through Facebook. Prior to Facebook Claire spent several years building the UX research team at Udemy, an online teaching and learning platform, prior to joining Facebook. Outside of work Claire is an avid crafter, cook, baker and traveler. She received her BA and MSc degrees from Stanford University where she studied applied anthropology, with an emphasis on ecotourism and sustainable development.

Nanako Era | Experience Researcher, Anti-Discrimination @Airbnb

Nanako works on the anti-discrimination and in-home accessibility teams as an experience researcher at Airbnb. In this role, she works to find ways for all users to have equitable experiences on the platform. Her passion for equal access through technology was initially sparked when she took an assistive technologies class at Carnegie Mellon while pursuing her masters in human-computer interaction. Prior to Airbnb and making the pivot to becoming a researcher, she worked as a UX designer at small startup companies in Seattle.
