Event description

Description

CT Students for a Dream is super excited to take this time to invite you to our 5th Educators Conference on May 20th! The conference focuses on the knowledge, skills, and resources that educators need in order to create a welcoming and supportive environment for undocumented students. Our theme this year, Building Unafraid Schools and Communities, recognizes that there are things we can before a student ever reveals they are undocumented to destigmatize the conversations around status in our schools and proactively have resources and information available.

We heard your feedback loud and clear about past conferences and we are including this year information on advocacy skills, more resources you can use immediately upon return to your classroom/ office, conversations around financial aid, money for college, and the new law we passed, and much more! We want this conference to be a launching point to continued conversations with CT Students for a Dream and with your schools to ensure we are building unafraid schools together.

We encourage both educators that have never been to a conference or training before and those that have a base knowledge already to attend. We are designing workshops and spaces for everyone who attends to learn and grow from. We encourage teachers, counselors, social workers, and administrators, college staff and anyone else who is interested in supporting undocumented youth to attend!

Our agenda will include:

  • Feedback session around the institutional aid process, how things are going, and what you and your students need to ensure the process of applying is smooth

  • Sessions led by the Boston Teachers Union around building an Unafraid Educator network at the K-12 network and what support looks like for them

  • Sessions on trauma, mental health, deportations, and other outside forces that students are dealing with beyond the school walls and what schools and educators can do to respond

  • Time to connect with and learn from other educators around the state who care about working with undocumented youth

THANK YOU TO OUR SPONSORS:

  • Connecticut School Counselors Association

  • Southern Connecticut State University

  • Connecticut Association of Latino Administrators & Superintendents

  • Community Foundation for Greater New Haven

  • New Haven Promise

Frequently Asked Questions:

Who Should Attend this Event?

K-12 teachers, counselors, administrators, parent liaisons, college faculty, staff, and administration, community organization staff, future educators, and others who care about education equity for undocumented students. This Conference is geared both towards educators that are new to the work and to those that have been to several trainings and conferences. There will be separate workshops to accommodate both of these groups so please come and tell your colleagues.

What is the timing of the Event?

Registration will open at 8:00am with the event beginning at 8:30am. Everything will conclude by 4:00pm. While we know it is difficult for some, we strongly encourage everyone to stay for the entire conference as it was designed for each session to build on the previous one throughout the day and you will miss out if you leave! There will also be a happy hour/reception following the event for those that want to stick around!

Can more than one person from the same institution attend?

Yes, and in fact, we strongly encourage multiple people from the same school, university, or organization to attend so that you can go to the different workshop offerings and work together on the action planning portion on what next steps you will take!

Will food be Provided?

Yes, there will be breakfast with coffee in the morning and lunch will be provided as well. Please reach out to us and let us know if you have any special dietary needs or allergies.

Can I get Professional Development Credit for this?

Based on a few different educators that we talked to, we know that each school district works a little differently but we are very willing to work with individuals and schools to make sure attendees are getting credit for being present as there is a lot of learning that will go on!

Can I Pay with a Purchase Order?

If you are paying through your district or school and need information about submitting a Purchase Order or other types of payments please reach out to us!
