Event description
Lessons-learned in Transitional Settings: Country-level Approaches to Weapon and Ammunition Management in Preventing Conflict

About this Event

Weak weapon and ammunition management (WAM) poses a significant challenge to peace, security and development. The diversion of materiel can contribute to strengthening the capacity of armed spoilers. Illicit arms and ammunition are enablers of urban violence, displacement of people, human rights violations, and organized crime. Their misuse poses barriers to delivery of humanitarian services, protection of civilians and critical infrastructures, as well as investment and economic growth.

The objective of this event is to promote knowledge on the role of WAM in preventing conflict and supporting security transitions. Designed as an interactive dialogue promoting discussion among the speakers and the audience, this event will highlight good practices and lessons-learned on effective WAM policies and practices developed by conflict-affected States. The event draws on concrete evidence from 10 national WAM assessments conducted by States in cooperation with UNIDIR, with particular lessons from four countries in Africa – the Central African Republic, Cote d’Ivoire, the Niger and Somalia.
