Workshop Overview 

 Influencing is the ability to achieve an outcome by using interpersonal and communication techniques without apparent use of direct authority.

 Assumptions that guide this workshop are: 

  • Organisational decisions, as well as manager and employee behaviour, impact on the Safety and Wellbeing of personnel who work in our organisations.
  • Those involved are usually unaware of the safety and wellbeing impact of their decisions and behaviour.
  • Managers, supervisors and employees are expected to take responsibility for operational safety.   
  • For many, including safety professionals, this requires a change of thinking from past expectations where the safety professionals took care of day to day safety.

To achieve genuine, long lasting change, Safety Professionals must convince managers and employees, through their influence, to take personal responsibility for safety and wellbeing in all they do because they want to, not because they have to.  

Who Should Attend

 This 2-day workshop has been designed for all Workplace Safety Professionals who want to enhance their ability to influence others to accept more responsibility for leading workplace safety. 

Learning Outcomes

At the completion of this workshop, participants should be able to:

  • Describe and apply the three building blocks for effective influencing;
  • Explain why it is important for Safety Professionals to understand themselves – their strengths and areas for improvement as well as organisational and behavioural psychology practices as they apply to safety;
  • Build and maintain trusting relationships across the business to broaden their personal circle of influence;
  • Build personal credibility so when their views are expressed they are respected and listened to;
  • Explain the role that having a business focus plays in influencing the business to take a broader, organisational wide view of safety;
  • Use a business focussed approach to increase influence,

and have developed an Action Plan to resolve a work related influencing issue.

Workshop Content

This workshop is highly interactive and may be professionally challenging for some. Participants will have ample opportunity to discuss their current influencing challenges and to put learning into practice. Content includes:

1.  Pre workshop

  • Pre workshop reading and preparation.  

2.  The Case for Safety Professionals using Influence

  • The scope of influence for Safety Professionals;
  • Concept of Law of Diminishing Returns and the need for Safety Professionals to look beyond compliance for safety improvements;
  • Interrelationship of organisational activity and safety. 

3.  Understanding Influence

  • What influence is and isn't;
  • Influencing Styles;   
  • Difference between Influence, Persuasion, Coercion and Manipulation;
  • Expanding your Circle of Influence.

4.  The Three Building Blocks of Influence

  • Personal Competence;
  • Trusting Relationships;  
  • Clarity of Purpose/Personal Vision.  

5.  Building Personal Competence

  • Understanding Self - Participants will be asked to complete a DiSC® profile prior to attending the workshop. This is used to help participants understand their propensity to using influence or persuasion, as well as their workplace behaviour, communication and relationship preferences, what that means for their organisational influence.
  • Building Competence – the skills required for effective influencing. This will include brief introduction to key organisational and behavioural psychology principles such as beliefs and values, motivation, change, conflict.
  • Business Alignment - Aligning yourself, and therefore safety with the business.

6. Building Trusting Relationships

  • Building and maintaining trusting relationships — personal “Trust Bank”; 
  • Rebuilding lost trust;
  • Techniques for influencing others such as using the ABC approach to influence, changing relationships from dependant (drama triangle) to independent (influencing cycle).

7.  Clarity of Purpose/Personal Vision for Safety

  • Developing/focusing your personal vision for safety in your business – why are you doing what you are doing?;
  • Importance of having business plan that is integrated with the organisations/business unit’s business plan;
  • Developing an influencing strategy – strategic and business.

8. Applying Influencing Skills in Specific Workplace Safety Situations

  • Participants apply workshop learning to several safety related influencing situations, including to current work issue. 

9. Planning for Return to Work

  • Develop an Action Plan preferably focussed on a specific influencing issue/s participants are currently involved with or may be involved with in the near future.

10.Workshop Follow-up

  • Approximately one month after the workshop, each participant will receive a follow up phone call. The purpose of this call is to review progress on Action Plans and to answer any questions a result of attending workshop.

Training Manual: You receive a comprehesive training that provides in depth information on material covered in  the workshop. If preferred, the training manual is available in soft or hard copy. 

Resources and Reference Guide: A Resource and Reference Guide provided as an addendum to the training manual .  

Workshop Length

A 2-day workshop for up to 20 participants.

Each day commences at 8.30am and finishes at 4.30 pm and is inclusive of:

For the past 15 years Trevor has been facilitating safety change internationally through worksite consulting and facilitating workshops. His philosophy is that people learn behavioural skills through experience so his workshops always involve active participation.

He has facilitated safety leadership workshops in North and South America, UK and Europe, Asia and the Middle East as well as in Australia. His guestimate is that he has had over 4000 workshop participants during that time. Companies he has deveoped and facilitated workshops for include the exploration arms of ExxonMobil, BP, Shell, Petronas well as for international oil and gas drilling contractors such as Ensco and Seadrill. Within Australia companies have included Santos, Rio Tinto, McDermott’s and Worley Parsons.

Overall, Trevor has over 30 years’ experience in organisational change including holding executive leadership positions.
