Automation of content management and business processes can help free today's busy professional from the time consuming but often trivial aspects of facilitating the flow of work within and between teams, and reduce time wasting mistakes in capturing and using information from business processes.

Chris Beckett

This course is focused on helping you author and support robust *real world* workflow solutions, taught by Chris Beckett, an industry recognized and certified SharePoint expert, author, trainer, and consultant. Chris has over a decade of experience building workflow solutions with SharePoint, and will demonstrate best practices for authoring and supporting workflows that can address the complexity of business processes. Chris has written on SharePoint 2010 Workflow and now is finishing the SharePoint 2013 Workflow book as well. He will be teaching this class himself to make sure you walk out with a breadth of SharePoint 2013 workflow knowledge!

Class Outline

Understanding SharePoint 2013 Workflows
We will review the SharePoint workflow architecture and infrastructure requirements, an introduction to the types of workflows that can be created in SharePoint, and a walk-through of authoring declarative *no code* workflows with SharePoint Designer 2013.

Designing SharePoint Workflows with Visio 2013
Visio 2013 and SharePoint Designer 2013 provide a new level of interoperability allowing workflow models to be imported and exported with full fidelity. Learn how to design a workflow using the SharePoint 2013 workflow template in Visio 2013, and then export and import the workflow into SharePoint Designer 2013.

Workflow Initiation, Configuration and State Management
Creating more robust and agile workflow solutions requires understanding how to initiate workflows with parameters, and how to externalize configuration elements. In this lesson, we cover the essentials of working with workflow parameters, internal variables, workflow status, and how to handle workflow configuration.

Managing Task Processes
SharePoint workflows are centered around facilitating human tasks associated with business processes. We will review how to author common task processes including work queues, sequential tasks, group assignments, and surveys.

Customizing the Workflow User Experience
Providing a good user experience for workflow participants is one of the most often overlooked but essential elements of designing and building successful workflow solutions. In this lesson, we will discuss how to tailor the user experience for workflow data collection and task completion, including the use of InfoPath browser-based forms, and custom list views and forms.

Working with Web Services
SharePoint 2013 has introduced the ability to call RESTful web services greatly enhancing the ability to extend the reach of workflow. In this lesson, we will review how to call web services, using dictionaries for navigating complex data structures, and how to use the new Loop capability for processing data sets.

Advanced Workflow Architectures and Workflow Interop
Advanced workflow solutions often require combining and coordinating multiple workflow processes. SharePoint 2013 and Workflow Manager also support the ability to call 2010 mode workflows using an Interop Bridge. In this lesson, we will examine how to coordinate multiple workflows for advanced solutions, as well as invoking the Interop Bridge to take advantage of investments in 2010 mode workflows.

Process Management and Performance Reporting
If you can't measure it, you can't manage it. In this lesson, we will discuss how to instrument your workflows to capture performance data that can be used for process tracking and management reporting.
