Event description

Description

The key to building beautiful gardens in South Florida relies heavily on choosing the right building materials for your application and applying common sense construction techniques to your garden design. Miami landscape designer, Carlos Somoza, will present both natural and man-made building material alternatives including locally quarried and imported stone, precast pavers, and tropical hardwood decking. Samples of materials will be available during class and a list of local building material suppliers will be provided to students.

Note: The content of this course covers traditional building materials and methods used for constructing outdoor spaces including terraces, swimming pool and wood decks for South Florida gardens. Students interested in horticulture, planting design and subtropical plants should consider enrolling in TROPICOLOR: PLANTING COMBINATIONS FOR SO FL GARDENS

Instructor Bio: Carlos Somoza is an award-winning landscape architect. He is passionate about the design and craft of modern tropical gardens. Carlos specializes in creating naturalized landscapes and contemporary outdoor spaces. His design studio purveys bespoke garden projects with unique narratives and memorable experiences. He travels with both passport and camera as he visits private estates and botanic gardens for design inspiration and to capture winning combinations of plant palettes in their native environment.
