Description

Building Liberatory Schools: Creating Safe and Inclusive Spaces for all Students and Staff Alike (Facilitated by Razan Abdin-Adnani)

During this interactive 2-hour workshop, we will imagine what liberatory educational institutions look like, environments in which all people can show up as their whole selves and not have to hide any part of their multi-layered identities (religion, race, sexual orientation, abilities, class, gender) in order to be accepted, supported, advocated for, and have the ability to thrive. What are the critical building blocks for truly inclusive, transformative schools?

Collectively, we will engage in dialogue, critical self-reflection, and activities in order to help us deepen our abilities to recognize the ways in which oppressive and discriminatory practices present themselves in the human resource policies at our schools as well as the ways in which Euro-centrism might seep into our curriculum. We’ll be delving into the messy, but critical, work of having honest, courageous conversations about race, oppression, and privilege, acknowledging structural inequalities in our schools and communities and thinking about the steps we can take to disrupt that inequity. Attendees will actively brainstorm ways to ensure that our policies and practices are inclusive and that our curriculum is culturally sensitive, accurate, and representative of our increasingly diverse schools.

We'll be trying out the interactive meeting format for this one, so we can see and hear each other and it can feel as interactive as possible!

This meeting WILL be recorded and sent via Dropbox for those of you who are unable to attend live.
