Event description

Description

Support connected & healthy older adults by volunteering with United Way at a Friendship Café! Senior Connections, a non-profit partner of United Way, hosts Friendship Cafés every week throughout our region where older adults connect with others, eat a meal and engage in healthy activities. Following a brief training, United Way volunteers will connect with older adults at the Friendship Café by volunteering together to create cards for United Way Literacy Kits. Multigenerational volunteers will share stories from childhood and advice to succeed in school. They will pass along that wisdom to the next generation in a card for a kindergartener.

Educate to Advocate | In our region, more than 1 in 4 older adults (65+) live alone. That’s 42,521 older adults who may be at risk for social isolation. Studies have found that social isolation negatively impacts a person’s health equal in consequence to smoking, high blood pressure and obesity. Senior Connections is the local capital area agency on aging, and together with partners like United Way is addressing and driving systemic changes that positively impact older adults.
