Description

Everybody has a story. How we tell it is up to us. This workshop will focus on tools that will help participants find a way to communicate their story while also giving strategies to empower student voice in all grade levels. By diving into visual and performing art techniques, free writing, and story craft, participants will gain confidence in sharing their own experiences as well a gaining a slew of practical pedagogical strategies for the classroom. These strategies will help develop an environment of empathy in the classroom, activating students and teachers alike to use clarity, understanding, and connectivity in their communities. This workshop is a fun and in depth look at what makes us unique and understanding that helps us understand the world as a whole. Whether you are a teacher or are simply interested in storytelling at any level, this workshop is for you.

Schedule

Day One

  • The Power of Storytelling- Overview and Introductions (1 Hour)
  • Story Platforms: Acting/Writing/Podcasting/Teaching & More (1 Hour)

  • Crafting Your Story: The Writing Process (30 Minutes)
  • Crafting Your Story (2 Hours)
  • End Day 1: Share-out, Reflections, and Takeaways (30 Minutes)

Dave Sheppard has been an elementary classroom teacher for more than ten years. He has incorporated creativity, technology and fun into teaching and learning. With a Master's degree in Elementary Education and having taught in both the US and in China, he is always encouraging students to challenge themselves and to “fail forward”. He uses storytelling to engage students and deliver curriculum.


Trey Hobbs holds an MFA in theatre from the University South Carolina and for the past ten years has enjoyed using theatre arts, both on and off stage, to tell stories. Now, in China, he has founded and hosts Shenzhen Stories, a live monthly event and podcast whose focus is to foster community in Shenzhen and by extension, the world.
