Event description

Description

Cultural Competence has moved from being a hot topic into a critical element of a successful organization. Many leaders and HR managers are aware of the needs and challenges of setting realistic goals in creating a more inclusive environment. To fully understand what it means to be inclusive we must first understand the factors that contribute to exclusion and prevent us from seeing our commonality.

This workshop will provide practical tools to create an inclusive work environment. We will begin with recognizing rank and privilege and the behaviors that accompany micro-inequities, and move into exploring language and the use of cover-terms and code switching that contribute to inclusion or exclusion. More importantly, we will explore and define inclusive leadership, identifying what behaviors we already exhibit and which we need to add to our tool kit to collectively create an inclusive environment and culture. It is not just up to the authorized leader to model inclusive behaviors. We all have a role in creating the organizational culture and environment that we want.

This workshop is structured to be experiential and interactive and geared toward adult learners. There will be experiential exercises, opportunities for small group work to discuss, reflect on learnings, and share ideas, and brief lecturettes.

Lunch will be on your own; there is a microwave and Farestart cafe in the building.

Participant Outcomes:

  • Identify factors that contribute to feelings of inclusion
  • Understand how rank and privilege, micro-inequities, and cover terms contribute to inclusion and exclusion
  • Learn practical tools and actions to create inclusion
  • Identify inclusive leadership behaviors that foster an environment of inclusion
