Event description

Description

Reed is a fantastically flexible material for creating giant, lightweight sculptures which can become puppets, masks, lanterns, kites, or more. This introductory class will cover basic techniques for building 3D forms with reed. You will learn to bend, fasten, and cover small-diameter reed using only your own hands, string, glue, and fabric. We will also introduce basic strategies for mounting and performing with reed objects. Create your own reed armature to take home!

Grace Needlman is an artist, educator, and museum worker. Grace is the co-creator of the Wonder Wagon, bringing experimental puppetry to Chicago parks, and an Artistic Associate at Rough House and co-curator of Nasty, Brutish, & Short at Links Hall. Her mask and puppet designs have appeared in productions at Rough House, Chicago Children’s Theatre, The Actor’s Gymnasium, and Redmoon. She is the Manager of Family and Youth Programs at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, and has worked as a teaching artist at Chicago Children’s Theatre, After School Matters, Urban Gateways, the Smart Museum, Arts + Public Life, and Redmoon. Grace graduated with a MA in Contemporary Art Theory from Goldsmiths University of London, and a BA in fine art from Yale University.
