Description

Build Local Alliance presents: A tour of the local wood supply chain

The tour will focus on how a local network of committed individuals and companies can bring sustainably-grown and -harvested wood to the marketplace. We’ll have three engaging and informative tour stops that trace the pathway of one project’s wood, as it makes its way from forest to facade.

Forest: Camp Adams

Trout Mountain Forestry has been managing camps in Northwest Oregon for over a decade, often seeking to combine careful forest stewardship with local use of the wood. Camp Adams is a showcase example of this stewardship. Come visit this 216-acre gem in Clackamas County, which features the confluence of two fish-bearing streams, as well as true old growth Douglas fir, Oregon white oak, and diverse upland forest. Forester Barry Sims will discuss his thinning and restoration projects, and maybe even give a live demo on low-impact logging techniques.

Mill: Kaster's Kustom Cutting

This FSC®-certified sawmill is committed to promoting sustainable forestry by purchasing logs from well-managed forests, and milled some of the siding for the One North project. Owner and sawyer Kevin Kaster will discuss and demonstrate how logs are turned into lumber.

Built Project: One North

Named 2016 Sustainable Project of the Year (Portland Business Journal Commercial Real Estate Awards), One North's sustainable features include low-carbon materials, a rooftop photovoltaic array, and a 50% reduction of energy usage through high-performance building principles.

At One North, we'll moderate a panel discussion on the opportunities and challenges of the local sustainable wood market. Panelists include Micheal Hurley (whose mill provided some of the project’s cedar); Ryan Temple of Sustainable Northwest Wood (supplier of cedar for the project); Cory Hawbecker of Holst Architecture (architect of One North); and Eric Lemelson, (project developer and specifier of the project's cedar).

Tickets include: transportation, sack lunch at Camp Adams, and appetizers/beverages at One North.
