Bug Out Bag and Survival Kit Course
Difficulty: Beginner to Intermediate
In this class we will put your personal bug out bag to the test and/or help you with the concepts to build your own in the future.
There are survival kits and bug out bags for sale all over the internet. Most are prefabricated kits and are not reliable. We know this because we have purchased multiple survival kits from various retailers and none of them have survived our tests, in fact many items in prefab kits were broken before we even got to use them. We will teach you how to put together a quality survival kit and hopefully set you up so that you do not purchase tools that will fail you when you need them the most. This class could save you thousands of dollars in broken, damaged or worthless cheap equipment.
In this course we will go over your basic requirements for a bug out bag or survival kit. We will discuss some do's and don'ts of bug out bags and some common myths. We will show you some basic modern and primitive fire starting and water purification techniques. If you have a bug out bag of your own, we strongly encourage you to bring it and put it to the test. Here's your opportunity to compare bag sizes! We will also discuss some basic Urban SERE and strategies to evacuate from urban environments.
Skills taught will include:
-Basic Primitive Shelters and the use of modern materials to construct quick shelters
-Primitive Water Procurement Methods
-Fire making with ferro rod and other modern fire making implements
-The use of lightweight food gathering tools: conibears, snares, and yo yo’s
-Navigation using watches, shadows, etc
-We will attempt to test every item within your survival kit
- Lightweight modern tools and kits to carry for comfortable wilderness survival
- Basic Escape and Evasion techniques
Food and Water: Water will be provided but you will be required to bring your own food. We encourage you to bring food that you have in your survival kit or purchase dehydrated food so that you know what to expect should you be in a survival situation and be made to use dehydrated foods. We recommend quick field expedient meals such as Wise Food, Survival Cave Food, Mountain House or MRE’s. They can quickly be made at our primitive camps and won’t slow down the learning process. You can ship these meals to our Colorado location if you don’t want to travel with them. We will store them until you arrive.
Length: 2 days/ 1 night
Minimum Recommended Equipment: We will not provide you with any gear, so please come prepared. Fixed blade knife preferable a mora style or other bushcraft knife, outdoor clothing, boots, folding saw, paracord, overnight camping gear, backpack. Check Recommended Items List for more details!
Suggested Survival Gear: You may bring your own bug out bag or survival kit. In fact we hope that you do. This is the perfect opportunity to put your gear to the test.
