Buffalo has the distinction of maintaining close relationships with some 16 cities the world over for 66 years since the program was first instituted by President Eisenhower in 1956. Sister Cities International’s (About Sister Cities International - Sister Cities International (SCI)) mission is to promote peace through mutual respect, understanding, and cooperation - one individual, one community at a time.
A local example is Buffalo's Dnipro Center which has been collecting medical supplies for Ukraine since the outbreak of the first Russian invasion of Crimea and Eastern Ukraine. Yuri Hreshchyshyn, a member and Buffalo native has served as an election observer in Drohobych, Ukraine with the Ukrainian Congress of America since 2004.
