Story-Telling in a Flash:

Techniques to Kick Start Your Creativity

Participants will have fun and work quickly in this flash fiction exercise discovering the art of creating plot, developing character, including conflict, and bringing about resolution in 1000 words or less. Discussion will center around the most important elements of story-telling in addition to those which most often get in the way. Our instructors, Gary Zenker and Julie Duffy, will demonstrate WritersBloxxTM, a game created by Gary in 2017, to generate writing prompts using random plots in six different categories.

GARY ZENKER is a marketing/business and fiction writer with 15 awards related to his writing. He is the author of several books, editor of more than two dozen. His short stories and flash fiction have been featured in a variety of print anthologies, newspapers, and online publications.

Gary founded and runs two Chester County writers’ groups, The Main Line Writers and the Wilmington-Chadds Ford, are now in their ninth and seventh years. The groups offer writers of all skill levels and genres the ability to better their craft, achieve their publishing goals, and form relationships with other writers. Gary has facilitated more than 100 critique sessions and written pieces on how to improve them from both the author and audience perspectives.

His flash fiction podcast, 999 Words or Less, is scheduled to debut in late 2018. His writing/story-telling game, WritersBloxx, funded through Kickstarter in 2017, is both a party game and a writers’ tool.

JULIE DUFFY is the founder of StoryADay.org and a speaker on writers’ topics including creativity, productivity for writers, self-publishing, and short stories. She shares tools and insights with authors in publications such as Writer’s Digest and Writers Journal. StoryADay.org was featured in Writer’s Digest 101 Best Websites for Writers pick in 2017.

Prior to Story-A-Day, Julie was Director of Author Services at Xlibris, the first company to offer print on-demand services directly to authors. She spoke at writers’ conferences about the new age of publishing and worked with authors from first-time writers to best-selling authors such as Piers Anthony and Daniel Pinkwater.
