Join NYC’s only curling community for a four-week instructional rookie league!

About this event

Join NYC’s only curling community for a four-week instructional league with Brooklyn Lakeside Curling Club! New curlers take to the ice weekly for friendly, 90-minute games.

Rookie League is for those who have just started to play: you’ve watched it on TV; you’ve taken a Try Curling class recently or a while ago; or you’ve never curled at all. Rookie League offers all the benefits of the BLCC Leagues, plus a Try Curling refresher followed by weekly coaching for skills and strategy, conducted by BLCC Instructors.

You may sign up as an individual or with your friends (who would need to complete their own separate registrations). Complimentary beer and water is provided for outdoor "broomstacking" after games.

Who can join: Rookie league is open to curlers of all experience levels, and is perfect if you've never curled before at all! And once you've completed a Rookie League you are eligible to join any other future BLCC leagues. All ages 21 and up, all genders, all everything else, are very welcome.

Setup and Takedown: BLCC is an all-volunteer club. Curlers will be required to be at the ice at the listed start time each week for sheet setup and ice prep which will allow us to have a timely start and insure that we get in our full 1.5 hours of game play.

Team Selection: If you have already formed a team, please make a note of your team members’ names in the "team notes" box when checking out. If you do not have a team, or have less than a full team, indicate so in the ‘team notes’ box when checking out. Be sure to include whether you have 1, 2, or 3 additional players, and indicate your number of years of curling. Players signing up without a team will be assigned to one at the first night of league.

All player slots are first come first served, so if you want to make sure your whole team is signed up, have all your teammates complete their individual registrations at the same time. Our events often sell out in a matter of days. Note that you must buy each ticket individually as we require each teammate's name and contact info for contact tracing purposes and to verify curling experience eligibility for the league.

COVID-19 Guidelines: Brooklyn Lakeside Curling Club is committed to conducting a safe season and has developed an extensive set of safety guidelines for game play on the ice, as well as setup, breakdown and broomstacking off the ice. For the 2021-2022 season, the COVID safety regulations will see a few changes from last year.

ALL BLCC CURLERS MUST BE FULLY VACCINATED.

ALL CURLERS WILL BE REQUIRED TO FOLLOW THE BLCC COVID-19 GUIDELINES IN ORDER TO PARTICIPATE IN THE 2021-2022 SEASON. Please make sure to review the guidelines on our site before registering and before your first match. If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to us at hammer@brooklyncurling.org

League Dates: Rookie League, Wednesday 2nd Session 8:30-10:45pm, January 19th, 26th, February 2nd, 16th (no curling 2/9)

League Format: The first week will be a Try Curling Class for all players which will get everyone up to speed on basic gameplay. After this, four teams will be created from the 16 league players and each team will play the other teams once over the remaining three weeks of the league, with BLCC instructors on hand for coaching and further instruction as needed.

Location: LeFrak Center at Lakeside, Prospect Park, 171 East Dr, Brooklyn NY 11225. Take the Q train to Parkside Av. or otherwise find your way to the Parkside and Ocean Avenue entrance to Prospect Park, enter the park and walk up the hill.

IMPORTANT: Pricing is $250 for a single curling team member + $75 for the mandatory annual dues for Grand National Curling Club (GNCC), United States Curling Association, (USCA) and Brooklyn Lakeside Curling Club (BLCC).

All league curlers will be required to follow our COVID-19 Guidelines this season. Please review the guidelines on our site before your first match. All curlers will be required to sign our Declaration of Compliance with the BLCC Covid-19 Player Safety Guidelines along with the standard BLCC Participant Release and Lakeside Release before your first game. Failure to adhere to the guidelines may result in a player being removed from the league without refund.

By signing up you agree to abide by the BLCC Covid-19 Player Safety Guidelines. You also agree to receive emails from us regarding your league and club news. Your email address will be shared with your teammates in order to facilitate team coordination.

REFUNDS & COVID-19: Because of the uncertain nature of curling during the pandemic, we may need to end the league early if there is an outbreak within the league or at the Lakeside facility, or due to changing state & local government mandates or restrictions. In the event of a shutdown of the leagues by a mandate issued by the federal, state, or local government, BLCC will be able to provide a pro-rata refund less our Eventbrite fees, or your remaining portion can be deemed a tax-refundable donation to the BLCC (a 501c3 organization) curling stone purchase fund. BLCC will not be able to issue refunds for any remaining league dates that cannot be completed due to COVID-19 related closures of the league or the Lakeside facility.

Weather Cancellations: Because the Lakeside rink is only partially covered, we occasionally must cancel due to extreme weather conditions. If there is a weather cancellation, BLCC will make its best effort to extend the league season by one week on the same night and time to compensate. BLCC will not issue refunds for any league dates cancelled due to weather.
