Event description

Description

Operating out of Kings County Criminal Court on Schermerhorn Street in Downtown Brooklyn, Brooklyn Justice Initiatives, more commonly known as ‘BJI’, occupies three renovated court rooms on the third floor of the building and is comprised of social workers, case managers, resource coordinators, and other support staff. BJI seeks to improve how the centralized criminal court handles misdemeanor and non-violent felony cases by offering judges alternative responses that can address the needs of the justice-involved individual. The alternative responses are social service programs like pre-trial supervised release, adolescent and adult diversion programs, mental health services, and human trafficking intervention. In 2017, BJI staff provided social services to over 4,000 justice-involved individuals, who might otherwise have been detained and/or incarcerated. BJI Project Director Jon Monsalve and Planner Laura Pelcher will lead a tour of Brooklyn Justice Initiative's offices within the Kings County Criminal Court building, with a focus on how it is transforming the existing architecture to provide dignified spaces for all. The tour will include time to observe court in session.

Admission is free, but advance reservations are required.

This program is organized as part of Spaces of Justice, a yearlong series organized by Open House New York to explore the architecture and infrastructure of New York’s justice system. Major support has been provided by the National Endowment for the Arts. Free admission is made possible by a grant from the Reba Judith Sandler Foundation.
