About this event

The world of classical music is rich, full, and honestly, a little isolated. It's easy to get caught up in high-falutin art music and overlook the music of the people, but there's real joy and power in these songs, and we're thrilled to present them to you.
Broadly speaking, what we call "folk music" arises organically and is passed down orally, co-written by generations of its own performers rather than put on paper by a single composer. It is also often participatory rather than performative; that is, instead of being intended for concert halls or audiences, these songs are all about the experience of singing them, and often had practical uses: work, play, celebration, mourning, even education.
The works that NYCC will perform are notated and rendered in a classical style, but they are built on melodies arising from folk traditions old and new. Join us as we sample just some of the breadth of styles under this umbrella, and explore the earthy humanity of folk music. (Attend in person, or buy a livestream ticket to tune in from anywhere.)
A note on the livestream: to stream the concert, you MUST get a "livestream" ticket here on Eventbrite (pay-what-you-can). You'll receive the streaming link via email an hour before the performance.
