About this event

Recording a Broadway experience and playing it back in homes across America was finally achieved in the 1940s with the creation of the "Original Cast Album," which featured all of the hit songs from a smash Broadway musical recorded by its on-stage performers. But while the genre was perfected over the following three decades and became a huge commercial success for the music industry, it wasn't without its fair share of challenges and controversies along the way. It's time to take a front-row seat and explore one of the most successful, glamorous, and yet undervalued, genres in the history of popular recording.

Join New York Adventure Club as we explore the Golden Age of the original Broadway cast album (1940s - 1970s), along with the host of artistic, technological, and commercial triumphs and tribulations that came to define it.

Led by Laurence Maslon, an arts professor at New York University and the author of a dozen books about musical theater and popular culture, this digital showcase surrounding cast albums will include:

  • The origins of the original Broadway cast album in the early 1930s, and which one was the very first
  • Why the 1940s to 1970s are considered the Golden Age of the Original Cast Album, and which recordings helped the genre become a runaway sensation
  • An overview of the industry surrounding Broadway cast albums, from the rival record labels to its inventive producers
  • A deep dive into some of the gold standard cast album recordings of all time, such as Oklahoma!, My Fair Lady, West Side Story, and The Sound of Music
  • Stories, anecdotes, and "backstage" photos surrounding recording sessions at the studio, with such personalities as Julie Andrews, Rodgers and Hammerstein, and Barbra Streisand — who almost got fired recording her first Broadway album
  • An analysis of beloved sound recordings and film clips

Afterward, we'll have a Q&A with Laurence — any and all questions about Broadway's original cast albums are welcomed and encouraged!
