Event description

Description

ADB Insights, a Vancouver based professional services consultancy, is organizing a high-level forum focused on the British Columbian legal profession. A full outline is available on: www.canlif.net

Lawyers are fundamental to business, government and society. All three of these pillars – driven by technology, demographic change and political displacement – are experiencing deep shifts in the nature of their relationship with each other. As a consequence, these shifts are having a significant impact on how law firms and law departments add value for their clients, their firms and their companies. In order to remain fundamental the legal sector must be more innovative. The purpose of this forum is to evaluate the British Columbian legal sector’s current state, emerging opportunities and the challenges it faces.

The business of law is rapidly evolving. New technologies – artificial intelligence, data and platforms – are changing the production, speed and modes of delivery of legal services. In the same vein, more established technologies such as collaboration and messaging tools – when implemented thoughtfully – are equally as impactful. Legal departments are broadening their footprint in terms of numbers, deeper integration into the front lines of their business and are increasingly under pressure to justify their cost base. New players, in the form of advisory firms, new law companies and technology platforms – are gaining a foothold in are areas that previously were the sole domain of law firms. These factors, along with many others, are reshaping the future British Columbian legal sector.

The BC Legal Innovation Forum – the first in a wider series of forums being held across Canada in the coming months – will focus on the drivers and results of this change. It includes a number of panels and presentations with innovators from law firms, law departments and legal technology companies adding their perspectives and experiences. The purpose is to provide a platform for legal practitioners to consider, debate and reframe the parameters of the current and future state of the province’s legal sector.
