Event description

Description

Join Jane Addams Hull-House Museum and The American Association of University Women (AAUW) for Women’s History Month in conversation with Nadiah Mohajir, the founder and executive director of HEART, and Zeina Zaatari, director of the Arab American Cultural Center, University of Illinois at Chicago.

The session will explore HEART’s year-long anti-sexual assault program on college campuses, a program of Reliance supported by AAUW. The presentation will provide an overview of working with Muslim student populations and Title IX offices, as well as the barriers facing this work and the strategies professionals can use in their advocacy roles.

HEART promotes sexual health and sexual violence provention in Muslim communities through education, advocacy, research, and training. HEART educates and promotes culturally-sensitive sexual health to end the silence that perpetuates gender violence and inequality.

The American Association of University Women (AAUW) is a leading voice promoting equity and education for women and girls, and counts Jane Addams as a founding member of the AAUW Chicago Chapter. Since 1881, AAUW members have examined and taken positions on the fundamental issues of the day — educational, social, economic, and political.

Jane Addams Hull-House Museum (JAHHM) draws upon the legacy of international peace activist and feminist, Jane Addams, and other social reformers who worked, alongside their immigrant neighbors, to create social change on the Near West Side of Chicago during the Progressive Era. The Museum preserves and develops the original Hull-House site for the interpretation and continuation of the historic settlement house vision. Exhibitions and public programs elevate histories of activism, progressive education and democratic principles of participation and exchange, and connect them to present-day social justice issues.
