Briefing: Ending Solitary Confinement in Juvenile Facilities
Event Information
Description
Please join us on Wednesday, August 2, at 2:00 pm in SR 485 for a Congressional briefing about Juvenile Law Center's latest report, Unlocking Youth: Legal Strategies to End Solitary Confinement in Juvenile Facilities.
Solitary confinement remains too widely used, despite a growing consensus that solitary hurts kids and undermines the rehabilitative goals of the juvenile justice system.
Juvenile Law Center's report leverages insights from surveys with public defenders; interviews with youth, families, and correctional administrators; and legal and psychological research to fill in knowledge gaps about the prevalence and harms of solitary. The report includes recommendations for 11 legal strategies to end the practice in juvenile facilities and explores how Ohio and Massachusetts both drastically cut back on solitary in juvenile facilities.
Panelists include the report authors, a juvenile facility administrator, and an advocate who experienced solitary as a youth. In addition to highlighting the harms of solitary confinement, panelists will share their perspectives on the practice and underscore the urgency of ending solitary in juvenile facilities nationwide.
Panelists include:
- Jessica Feierman, Associate Director, Juvenile Law Center (moderator)
- Eddie B. Ellis, Founder, One by 1
- DeShane Reed, Juvenile Justice Consultant; Former Superintendent, Marion County Juvenile Detention Center (Indiana); Author of The Art of Holistic Security
- Karen U. Lindell, Staff Attorney, Juvenile Law Center
- Natane Eaddy, Staff Attorney, Juvenile Law Center
