Brief but Brilliant: Disruption in Advertising

Disruption is a part of natural evolution as Charles Darwin wrote in the Origin of the Species. Darwin’s words apply to business today. He said, “It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that is most adaptable to change.” During this year’s Brief but Brilliant Program, presenters will speak to a set of pre-timed, auto-advancing slides – giving them just 5 minutes to share their brilliance! From redefining creativity to breaking the status quo, these mini TEDTalk-style presentations will share brands that are disrupting traditional advertising.

Speakers:

Dan Ballard, President, Clear Channel Outdoor

Dan Seeman, Vice President, Hubbard Radio

Hillary Hoffman, Manager, Comcast Spotlight

Ryan Green, Senior Director of Client Strategy, Coegi

Kristy Laue, Vice President of Creative, Lawrence & Schiller

Jennifer Spire, Partner/CEO, Preston Kelly

A Little About 2019 Silver Medal Award Recipient Kathy Umland

Kathy’s official title should maybe be “Mom of the Creative Department.” As the in-house creative recruiter, manager of creative workloads and administrator of all the details surrounding the creative discipline, she maintains that approachable and (mostly) unflappable demeanor of a mom. Having worked with many of the best creative people in the industry for the past 35 years has made her uniquely qualified to assess talent and determine if those talented people are a good cultural fit for the agency. Nothing gives Kathy more pleasure than giving a person a chance in the industry, from intern to experienced, and watching that person achieve success.

While “not a creative person” herself, Kathy been honored for her work with the American Advertising Federation by twice being named a Paul Foss Award recipient, as well as being named one of the 25 “Women to Watch” by the Business Journal. She has served on several boards close to her heart: The Minnesota Twins Community Fund, Art Buddies and the MCTC Advisory Board. Kathy also came closest to her dream of being an elementary school teacher by serving as an adjunct professor at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design.

Besides staying integrated in the worlds of advertising and the arts, Kathy loves the Minnesota Twins and hopes they make a playoff run this year!
