Bridging the Policy Research-Policymaking Gap: Scholars Strategy Network
Monday, October 14, 2013 from 12:15 PM to 1:30 PM (CDT)
San Francisco, California
London, United Kingdom
Join the Center for Health and Social Policy at the LBJ School of Public Affairs for a lunchtime introduction to the innovative Scholars Strategy Network by Dr. Morgen Johansen of the University of Hawaii.
The Scholars Strategy Network is working to bridge the gap between policy research and policymaking at national, state, and local levels.
The communications skills and techniques the Scholars Strategy Network fosters are invaluable for anyone who wishes to have an impact on real-world policymaking, and we are excited to introduce UT Austin students, faculty, staff, and alumni and the broader Austin community to the SSN.
More background from the Scholars Strategy Network website:
The Scholars Strategy Network brings together many of America's leading scholars to address pressing public challenges at the national, state, and local levels. As progressive-minded citizens, SSN members spell out the democratic and policy implications of their research in ways that are broadly accessible. SSN members engage in consultations with policymakers in Washington DC and state capitals. They make regular contributions to the media and share research findings with journalists and bloggers. SSN scholars are also committed to working closely with advocates and leaders of citizen associations to come to better understandings of the nation's social and political challenges.
Members prepare short, vividly written briefs highlighting research findings, presenting basic facts on timely topics, and offering policy options about many issues – ranging from how best to create jobs, spur economic growth, and ensure effective health and educational reforms, to how to revitalize American democracy and tackle knotty challenges of reforming the nation's immigration system and protecting the environment.
This event is free and open to the public, but registration is required for catering and communication purposes. Lunch will be provided to all those who registered.
We encourage the use of alternative transportation to get to the LBJ School. A number of Capital Metro bus routes have stops on the streets adjacent to the LBJ School (including the 10, 20, 21, 22, 37, FA, EC, CR, RR, CP, NR, LS, and WL routes), and four bicycle racks are available on the east side of the building. If you need to drive, paid car parking is also available in the Manor Garage to the south of Sid Richardson Hall ($6 for 1-2 hours).
