Bridging Our Differences: Experiential Diversity

In this time of nationalism versus globalization, the need to more relationally engage with those whose life experiences and opinions differ from our own is relevant and timely. At the macro-level, as a species facing global challenges, we must learn to effectively address our divergent perspectives. It is critical that we learn to broach these difficult (and often uncomfortable) conversations in a manner that allows for the development and maintenance of strong working alliances. At the micro-level, for Marriage & Family Therapists (and all mental health professionals), the question becomes one of how to effectively engage clients in conversations about micro- and macro-level issues, particularly when there are no easy answers and/or we find our own personal beliefs and values challenged in the process.

Drawing on the heart-centered, relational concepts from last year’s conference, at this year's AAMFT-HI Annual Conference, attendees will be invited to participate and bear witness to a series of four dialogues referred to as Experiential Diversity. These dialogues will include multiple representatives from the Hawaiian Islands, Hawai'i, Maui, O’ahu, and Kaua’i. Representatives will bring their experiences and expertise on the topics of race/ethnicity, sexual orientation/gender, and colonization. A fourth dialogue will provide conference-goers the opportunity to consolidate their learning and explore ways to incorporate clinical practice material from the conference; the bridging.

Unlike most professional conferences in which there is a keynote speaker (and attendees are often passive recipients of the speaker’s teachings), Experiential Diversity is designed to make our self-of-the-therapist attitudes, beliefs, and values the source of both expertise and learning. Attendees will be invited to participate in the dialogues as they feel comfortable doing so. In this way, participants may offer their unique wisdom, as well as be the recipients of others' wisdom, on the conference's dialogue topics.

It is the aim of this conference to achieve the following objectives (some of which have been identified by the AAMFT as core MFT competencies):

Clinical Assessment and Diagnosis

Executive - Understand how to more effectively assess client behavioral and relational health problems systemically and contextually.

Treatment Planning

Professional - Experience methods for more effectively monitoring your personal reactions to clients and the treatment process.

Therapeutic Interventions

Conceptual - Discuss the strengths, limitations, and possible contraindications of ones’ theory of change, including the risk of harm associated, that incorporate assumptions of family dysfunction, pathogenesis, or cultural deficit.

Evaluative - Evaluate your theory of change for consistency and congruency relative to the cultural and contextual environment in which you practice.

Professional - Practice how to elicit and respect multiple perspectives.

Legal Issues, Ethics, and Standards

Evaluative - Consult with peers and receive feedback on person-of-the-therapist issues, attitudes, and/or beliefs that may threaten to adversely impact clinical work and/or create vulnerability for the perpetuation of isms.

We are very excited to see you on Aug 26. Please let us know if you have additional questions OR wish to be a formal part of the panel. Write to: deepa_ram.souza@yahoo.com or aamft.hi@gmail.com.
