Jane's Ride in SurreyTour Description

Tour Host: Bernadette Keenan

This Jane's Walk will be a Jane's Bicycle Ride through Surrey's historic Bridgeview neighbourhood. Bridgeview is a resourceful, resilient primarily residential community that has resisted past government attempts to industrialize it out of existence, and today faces new threats.

The tour will start at a Surrey SkyTrain station and head directly through some newer commercial development, past existing industrial properties to a reclaimed waterfront park by a small private boat launch.

Looping back through a longtime industrial / commercial area along the route of the proposed South Fraser Freeway, the tour will stop to visit some of the more memorable locations in the ongoing campaign against the freeway.

Time and inclination permitting we may visit one of Bridgeview's hidden beaches, then head over to our much-beloved fishing dock, which draws people from all over Surrey.

Finally, the tour will head to the heart of Bridgeview – visit the school, ride through the residential area and finish up at Bridgeview Hall where people can visit the flea market that is open till 3:00pm to take in the sustainable spirit of the community.

Tour Host Bio

Bernadette (No Trucking Freeway) Keenan has lived in Surrey's Bridgeview for 18 years.

When she moved there she believed that with time the small residential community located on the South Fraser Water Front would develop to become like Granville Island along False Creek or Steveston with mixed-use residential / industrial / commercial.

A long time recycling fanatic, Bernadette was so appalled when Environment Minister Barry Penner signed off the environmental assessment on the south Fraser freeway that she became an environmental activist, promoting transit transportation solutions rather than more pavement, since more freeways always means more traffic.

Along the way Bernadette has learned a lot including who Jane Jacobs is and thinks a Jane's Walk is an excellent way to acquaint people with her neighbourhood, which may seem a bit rough around the edges, but is really a diamond in the rough.

Special Instructions

Bicycles required – preferably mountain bikes since some paths are in poor condition or not paved.

Locks are also recommended as we may leave the bikes for short periods. The tour will end at Bridgeview Hall which has a flea market every Sunday and requires an admission fee. Bathrooms available at start (emergency only) and end of tour.

This tour is not wheelchair accessible.
