In Martinsville-Henry County, inter-generational poverty is increasing due to the volatility of our economy, specifically in the areas of income, gaps in job skills and training, and wealth inequalities that stem from differences in race, gender, and socio-economic status. Bridges reach out to millions of service providers and businesses whose daily work connects them with people in poverty.
Prudence Pease will present the uniquely powerful tool called Bridges Out of Poverty: a model designed for community professionals and service providers based on Dr. Ruby Payne's Framework for Understanding Poverty. Prudence was the Keynote Speaker for the Harvest Foundation's Nonprofit Leadership Summit in October 2015. If your business, agency or organization works with people from poverty, a deeper understanding of their challenges --- and strengths --- helps bring forth partnerships to create opportunities on how to better work with these vulnerable populations.
People living in poverty and from poverty are often in survival mode. Support systems are available however, they are more aligned with the mindset of a middle-class person, which creates unintentional but detrimental barriers for people living in poverty. Bridges Out of Poverty will uncover and dive deeper into the "hidden rules" that govern many aspects of a person's economic mobility. Along with information and discussion, Bridges will leave professionals with specific solutions and practical action steps so that our community can collectively:
- Redesign programs to better serve the people we work with
- Build skill sets for management to help guide employees
- Upgrade training for front-line staff
- Improve treatment and outcomes in healthcare and behavioral healthcare
- Increase the likelihood of moving from welfare to work
United Way of Henry County and Martinsville is presenting this event with funding support from The Harvest Foundation, Martinsville Area Community Foundation, Blue Ridge Human Resources Association, and the FINRA Investor Education Foundation.
