Bridge Building Workshop for elementary age kids and parents


Big Blue Marble Bookstore's 14th Annual Kids' Literary Festival welcomes Rachel Dougherty, author/illustrator of of the picture book Secret Engineer: How Emily Roebling Built the Brooklyn Bridge.

This workshop for elementary-aged kids and their parents will introduce Emily Roebling and explain the basics of how bridges work. Using simple building materials families will make their own bridges.

Northwest Philadelphia is home to many different kinds of bridges, and this workshop will make your family walks through the Wissahickon a whole new world!

The workshop is $10/family (please plan on a ratio of no more than two kids to one adult to facilitate building together). The workshop will be at Mt. Airy Nexus, 520 Carpenter Lane, on the same block as the bookstore.


Rachel will be at Big Blue Marble Bookstore after the event to sign books and meet fans. She'll be at a free-to-the-public panel on Publishing for Children at 2:30 pm at the bookstore, 551 Carpenter Lane.


Rachel Dougherty is a Philadelphia-based illustrator, children's author, and lifelong knowledge-hunter. She works inacrylic paint, ink, and pencil smudges, using humor and color to inspire curious young minds. Rachel is passionate about US history, scruffy little dogs, and board games.
