We know that breastfeeding is an important part of the post-birth bonding experience with your new baby. We also know that for most new moms, it's not as easy as it looks! Our dedicated nurses will reinforce the amazing decision you are making to feed your baby and equip you with the techniques to do it well. We give you "homework" before baby arrives, teach you the basics of breast anatomy, practice the five key steps to a good latch and help you recognize hunger cues. We will discuss pumping and storing breast-milk and how to prepare for the transition back to work (or breaks out of the house)! We'll also talk through the possible complications and difficulties for new breastfeeding moms, when to introduce solid foods and the use of pacifiers. This class includes a resource guide to breastfeeding and further information about the lactation consultants available at Deaconess Hospital. We also offer the Amy Spangler book "Keep It Simple Breastfeeding" in our Deaconess Giftshop for optional purchase. This is a prenatal class designed with "Moms only" in mind.
This class is taught by Paula Judah, IBCLC, RN and Debbie Christensen, IBCLC, RN.
IF YOU ARE PLANNING TO DELIVER AT DEACONESS and/or BIRTHWISE YOU WILL NEED TO ENTER THE PROMO CODE "DEACONESS" AS SOON AS YOU START YOUR REGISTRATION. IT IS THE SKY-BLUE TAB-OTHER WISE THE CLASS IS $15. Thank You!
Where do I park for class? We apologize that our parking is no longer offered free during the week. It is, however, free for our Saturday class. You may park in the parking garage located below the Maternity Center on the corner of 5th and Wall for $3 or on the street. Again, this is NOT where you park for prenatal appointments. You can enter the parking garage driveway off of 5th avenue. There is a black sign with an arrow to look for on 5th Avenue.
Where exactly is this class located? All of classes and groups are held in the Newborn and Childbirth Education rooms located on the 2nd floor of THE DEACONESS MATERNITY CENTER (which is not where you go for prenatal appointments.) When you exit the elevator from the parking garage you will see our Mother-Baby Unit to the right; instead walk left (west) across the sky-bridge to the classrooms. Please remember to bring your parking ticket to class for validation. Parking is free on the weekends.
What should I bring to the class? Just come~ dress comfortably and in layers. A small snack is provided.
