Insights into the Conference

Feeding Behavior: Baby - 2 Years

Caregivers' misinterpretation of common behaviors among older infants and toddlers may resul in inappropriate feeding practices that increase risk for childhood obesity. Given the success of the Baby Behavior curriculum in the WIC program, a quality improvement project was conducted to determine if expanding the messages to include behaviors of older infants and toddlers was associated with improved outcomes among Arizona WIC participants. In these presentations, Dr. Heinig will provide an overview of the study methods and outcomes and train attendees to use the messages in their own environments.

Supporting Decision-making among Caregivers Under Stress

Caregivers under stress sometimes make decisions that are difficult to understand. Recent research into the neurobiology of behavior provides insight on how stress influences our ability to make decisions. In this session, participants will learn about this research and how the findings might be used to better support informed decisions among families facing serious physical, financial, social or emotional challenges.

Nursing and Parenting Toddlers: What's Normal?

Healthcare and allied professionals may be challenged to understand why a mother would continue nursing an “older” child -- well into the threes and fours and more. Should this be viewed as a problem? Is there anything at all that should concern us about a late weaning couplet? What is normal?

We will assemble a group of experts in the field of Toddler Nursing, including La Leche League leaders, lactation consultants, mothers who have done it. Listen to their reasons, their experiences, and see if they even seem to have survived!

Course Objectives:

1. Provide an overview of older infant and toddler feeding behaviors.
2. Inform about stress management in breastfeeding and parenting infants/toddlers.
3. Train attendees to use these messages in their environments.
