Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg asks a powerful question at the beginning of her bestseller, Lean In:

What would you do if you weren’t afraid?

The question opens a world of potential—a view of your self and your life from a different perspective.

But then what?

If we could just snap our fingers and our fears would disappear, that would be fantastic. But it doesn’t work that way.

We need to make a breakthrough—a developmental shift within ourselves as women—to live beyond the habits that keep us from the inner freedom to be the people we want to be.

On Saturday, October 5, you can learn how to make that breakthrough by joining Dr. Elizabeth Debold and Mary Adams together with hundreds of pioneering women around the globe for their next virtual seminar, Breakthrough Women: Developing True Confidence & Autonomy While Living in a Man’s World.

What does it mean to “live in a man’s world”? It’s not against men—men are some of our greatest supporters, partners, and allies. But through the march of history, our society has basically been shaped for men to be the ones creating, building, and taking risks, while women supported them and raised the children.

The world, as we still experience it, wasn’t really made for world-changing women who have a passionate purpose, meaningful work, and powerful relationships. But we can change that!

Elizabeth and Mary have been there—they have spent nearly two decades as part of a group of committed women working with a male spiritual teacher. Through the intensity and focus of working together in this culture led by a powerful, charismatic man at the top of a traditional power hierarchy, they have hands-on experience with the deep dynamics that hold the status quo in place between women and with men. In this seminar, they will guide you in how to discover a new perspective and capacity for creative action that comes from cultivating depth, strength, objectivity, love, and resilience – even while living in a “man’s world.”

So, if you are a woman who wants to have an impact and make a difference, but you find that:

  • You often pull back and wait to see what others say rather than expressing what you think because you aren't sure if what you have to say is right or important.
  • You get caught between complying and being a “good” woman and rebelling in a feminist fury.
  • You are hedging your bets between giving to your career and having a child—and not fully committing to either.
  • Despite all of your achievements, a lot of the time you feel like a fraud, as though you didn’t really accomplish all that you have.
  • You have a hard time being heard or taken seriously by your male colleagues.
  • You hesitate and avoid taking key risks because you don’t want to blow it and make a mistake.
  • You want constructive feedback, but find when you get real criticism, you recoil and lose confidence.
  • You worry that you are too loud or “too much” and try to shrink down to a Size 2 personality in order to fit in and have relationships.
  • You start things but never quite follow through because you don’t have enough confidence in your own vision to back it up.

Or maybe you just realize that you are just not as bold, daring, creative, and kick-ass as you truly know you could be.

Most of us think these things are our personal problems—but they aren’t. They happen to just about every woman who wants to live to her fullest potential.

We’ve been told that today we can be whoever we want to be and do whatever we want to do—that it doesn’t matter that we are female. But it’s not that simple.

Through growing up and learning how to live in what is still a man’s world, despite ourselves we’ve been conditioned, habituated to fit into women’s historical roles and psychological postures—that is, to keep relationships smooth, take care of others’ needs, be attuned to those in power, pick up the pieces, etc. etc. These are powerful and important skills. But when we need to step up and step out with our passion, our vision, and direct action, they can get in the way.

Discovering depth and a fearless care for the life process we are part of allows you to face the ways we women have been shaped to live in a man’s world, and gives you access to a strength, inner stability, clarity, and freedom that can change your life forever. These enduring capacities will enable you to break through to real partnership with men and support for each other so we can forge a new culture together.

Elizabeth and Mary will lead you in their four-step Breakthrough Women Process:

  1. Breakthrough to the deepest you, who is already free and at ease
  2. Breakthrough the perils of personalization and perfectionism
  3. Breakthrough to a deeper life motivation that rides the current of true purpose
  4. Breakthrough to action to become a truly world-changing woman

During the Breakthrough Women seminar, you will be taken through this process using Elizabeth and Mary’s hands-on experience and tested tools for transformation. These tools awaken the deepest level of awareness and capacity in your self so that you can free your creative potential and skills here and now. Through presentation, small group work, and Q&A, you will:

  • Discover a core depth in your self that gives you an inner stability and ease of being
  • Understand how women’s development is shaped by living in a man’s world so that you realize that these issues are not your personal problems
  • Identify the “9 Faces of Eve”—the different personas that women often unconsciously adopt to deal with male power structures so that you can avoid them in yourself and understand them in others
  • Awaken to a deeper motivation to actualize your highest mission and vision so that you become more willing to take important risks
  • Increase your capacity for objectivity and discernment so that you can de-personalize challenging situations and use criticism productively
  • Develop the capacity to hold multiple truths and simultaneously work toward a larger vision
  • Prioritize your life goals so that you can steer through complexity and stay on track
  • Create a sisterhood of women who will have your back so that you can receive and give the support and perspective we each need to reach our goals

Breakthrough Women will begin at 10:30 AM EST and end at 4:00 PM EST, with an hour lunch break. Each participant will be given a unique Maestro conference number to join the seminar.

Dr. Elizabeth Debold, bestselling author, developmental psychologist, and keynote speaker, is one of the world’s foremost authorities on gender and women’s development. Founding member of the Harvard Project on Women’s Psychology and Girls’ Development, directed by Dr. Carol Gilligan, she received her doctorate in developmental psychology from Harvard University, earning honors for her groundbreaking theory on the effect of cultural power dynamics on girls’ and boys’ development. Her bestselling book, Mother Daughter Revolution (Addison-Wesley, 1993; Bantam, 1994), was a New York Times Notable Book of the Year. For seventeen years, she committed to living with a group of women, working with spiritual teacher Andrew Cohen, to forge a new pathway for women’s development. Elizabeth lectures and conducts seminars internationally and is often sought as an expert on gender issues on programs including Oprah, Good Morning America and NPR. Her work has appeared in academic publications, popular media, and international anthologies as well as in EnlightenNext magazine, where she was Senior Editor from 2002-2011. Elizabeth is a Senior Teacher of Evolutionary Enlightenment, a Founding Partner of the Institute for Cultural Evolution, and Founder of the new online platform for women and leadership, Artemis Forum.

Mary Adams, spiritual leader and mentor, has over thirty years experience integrating the insights of spiritual enlightenment into the complex reality of human development and transformation. As one of a handful of Senior Teachers of Evolutionary Enlightenment, Mary creates and teaches innovative programs globally that catalyze individuals and groups to develop new capacities of awareness, relatedness, and creativity. Her passion for women’s awakening and authentic leadership has made her a leader in forging a new developmental path for women based on the principles of Evolutionary Enlightenment. She is currently EnlightenNext’s Director of Education, and is working on a book based on the breakthrough principles of The Ten Agreements for Evolving Women, the signature program taught by Mary and her teaching partner, Dr. Elizabeth Debold. Mary has also created and co-led seminars with Elizabeth on The Shift Network and other online platforms.

These two leaders have developed their insight into women’s development through their own experience over years within a uniquely pressured environment—one that attempted the complex and risky endeavor of attempting the evolution of human beings and culture in real time. The dynamics of working closely together as a small group of women within a traditional power-based hierarchical context has given them a deep understanding of the cultural forces and unconscious human impulses that can pit women against each other and drive them to seek male affirmation. These are forces that have, and still often do, impede women’s confidence, self-authorship, and cultural leadership. Over the course of fifteen plus years, Elizabeth, Mary and their female colleagues have developed a trust and perspective that makes it possible to take innovative action and co-creatively contribute to a new ground between women and with men.

Artemis Forum

Artemis Forum is a hub for women to think together about the future we want to create. The changes happening in our lives around marriage, work and family combined with our aspirations for leadership and impact are sending shock waves through our culture. Because our lives often are overwhelmingly full and busy, it’s easy to miss the fact that the choices that we are making are actually contributing to seismic changes in society at large. We are essentially rocking the foundation on which our culture has been built. In the midst of it all, we rarely think about the bigger picture. That’s the purpose of Artemis Forum. To give women a chance to think about who we are, where we are now, and what future we want to creat

Artemis Forum exists for serious, sophisticated women who want to make an impact on culture and who seek significant conversation and challenging support in order to become the evolutionary leaders we need to be. The Forum is also a learning platform for innovative courses and programs through which we can develop and express the philosophy and values that will help define our next step forward as women.
