Event Details

Bend Outdoor Worx is proud to present the second year of BreakOut BootCamp, a series of educational sessions to give start-up businesses the knowledge and tools to kick their business into gear. Join panel experts in branding, marketing, finance, strategy, sales and more. The sessions are in partnership with the Oregon Outdoor Alliance. 

Four sessions will focus on key principles for launching and running a successful business. Panellists include top industry experts with experience across finance, marketing, product management, branding, and more.

Boot Camp Session #1: Who are you? (9:30am-10:45am) - Learn about branding, finding your brand's voice, marketing, why you do what you do, personas, market analysis and more!  

Moderator:

Georell Bracelin, founder and brand strategist at the Relativity Agency in Bend, OR has helped promote brands like Morrow Snowboards, Nitro Snowboards, ESPN, and Sprite plan, create and promote their brands through irresistible marketing strategies

Panellists:    

Meg Chun is the CEO and Brand Manager of KIALOA Paddles, as well as a founder and owner and has been in a leadership position with KIALOA since 2001. 

Victor Ortado works with an incredibly talented team as the Creative Director at Ruffwear, helping to develop their visual communications through brand storytelling, photography, video, package design, marketing and advertising campaigns.  Off hours, he teaches theater and performing arts to Bend youth and follows a lifelong passion for creating original, experiential productions.


 

Boot Camp Session #2: How do you do it? (11am-12:15pm) - Learn how to develop structure around: pricing, strategy, competitive analysis, margins, sales channels, financial sustainability, and profitably. 

Moderator:

Gary Bracelin is a Bend Outdoor Worx co-founder and Mentor.  He became an early adopter of organic apparel usage in the outdoor industry and has worked with brands such as Patagonia, Prana, LuLu Lemon, Marmot.  He formed one of the first sales rep groups to serve the action sports industry and helped pioneer the new snowboard sports category.

Panellists:   

Van Schoessler was the former Sales Manager for Stanley Outdoor.  He now operates his own consulting practice, Base Camp Oregon and was the founding President of the Oregon Outdoor Alliance. 

Alan Kissell is the Director of Sales for Sports and Outdoor Channels for Hydroflask, was the West Regional Manager for Superfeet, the National Sales Manager for Footwear at Columbia/Sorel, and Director of Specialty Sales at Adidas.

 


 

Boot Camp Session #3: How do you pay for it? (1:15pm-2:30pm) - Discover options for raising money, equity, incurring debt, getting production financing, bridge loans, and becoming bankable. 

Moderator: Justin Rae was lucky to start his outdoor apprenticeship as a professional river guide working throughout the world.  He is a mentor and co-founder of Bend Outdoor Worx and when not working on his many side projects he works with entrepreneurs and executives through his wealth management business at Northline Wealth Management

Sarah Poole is the Co-Founder and CEO of Take Two Beverages, and Founder and CEO of Pacific Superfood Snacks, an organic snack company, which later became part of the Made In Nature family of brands. 

Heather Kelly is the founder and CEO of Heather’s Choice, a line of dehydrated meals and snacks for adventuring.  Born and raised in Bird Creek, Alaska, Heather is an avid outdoorswoman who loves nothing more than packrafting, picking blueberries and planning her next backcountry trip.  She is a two time NCAA National Champion and All-American in women’s rowing, evolutionary nutritionist and certified psychology of eating coach turned food entrepreneur.. 

Matt Smith is an experienced entrepreneur and leader with hands-on experience in a wide range of disciplines. He specializes in concept through launch phase companies, building teams, setting strategy, and driving products forward with constant validation tests along the way. He has worked in a wide range of disciplines and positions including CEO of Tribe Pilot, President of consumer products company, General manager of overseas automotive supplier, Chairman and CEO of medical device company, Director of engineering engine technologies company, and Founder of unmanned aircraft/propulsion systems company.  Along the way he has raised capital using a variety of sources: Bank Financing, Grants, Convertible Debt, Equity, Strategic Partnerships, and is now pioneering shared earnings for the region. 

Scott Davidson is a partner at White Summers Caffee & James Attorneys in Portland. Scott works with entrepreneurs in start-up and later-stage companies in industry groups including consumer brands, apparel, footwear, outdoor, entertainment and technology.  Scott is the Legal partner/mentor for Bend Outdoor Worx.

 

Boot Camp Session #4: How do you sell it? (2:45pm-4pm) - Drive sales traffic with digital strategies, social media, SEO, events, crowdfunding, and good old-fashioned hustle.

Moderator:  

Justin Rae was lucky to start his outdoor apprenticeship as a professional river guide working throughout the world.  He is a mentor and co-founder of Bend Outdoor Worx and when not working on his many side projects he works with entrepreneurs and executives through his wealth management business at Northline Wealth Management.

Panellists:    

Adam Audette moved to Bend 27 years ago to climb rocks and snowboard. Smith was empty and the Cone was untracked.  Eventually, the seasons of life found him married with a family, long lines in the Dihedrals, and the West Bowls tracked out by 10am.  In 2005 he started a small digital marketing agency.  It grew and eventually landed inside a global holding company called Dentsu.  Hid days are filled with idealistic dreams and teenage daughters.  His dog keeps the house sane. 

Drew Jensen is the owner of Jensen eCommerce, a consulting agency based here in Bend.  He helps clients navigate the world of online retail, with a specific focus on Amazon channel management.  A 5 year stint at Amazon in Seattle helped to build a customer-centric, data-driven approach that has given his clients the tools necessary to succeed online.

Bend Outdoor Worx (BOW) is a Bend-based organization that helps scale outdoor industry start-ups. After assessing common needs from the outdoor industry businesses, BOW was initially conceived in 2013 by Gary Bracelin, a long-time Bend resident and outdoor industry veteran. BOW was officially launched in April 2014, when additional industry experts Eric Meade, Justin Rae, and Will Blount joined Bracelin. The founders represent various skill sets and a multitude of experience with successful organizations. In August of 2015, outdoor professional Miki Keller joined the group.
