Event description
Express yourself and connect with others through singing, painting and living with a bleeding disorder!

About this Event

This is a Teen Only event-- Ages 13-18!

• Breaking Through! is a first-of-its-kind arts therapy workshop centered on the therapeutic power of the arts and self-expression for teens living with a bleeding disorder.

• Each workshop is broken in two parts – starting with a session on self-expression through painting. As an ice breaker, the teens spend time thinking about “The Broken Column,” a painting by Frida Kahlo. The painting symbolizes pain and suffering with her body covered up by what many believe to be a hospital sheet. Frida has tears on her face, but by looking straight ahead, she is challenging both herself and her audience to face her situation. After a discussion about the painting and the feelings it evokes, the students are given a blank canvas with the task of painting how living with a bleeding disorder makes them feel and/or the challenges they face living with a bleeding disorder.

• The second part of the workshop is focused on the power of singing, giving the students an opportunity to express themselves through music. A music director works with the teens to learn a song about life with a bleeding disorder, allowing them to use their voices through the power of music.

Breaking Through is presented by BioMarin.
