Description

Chiefs for Change and the Thomas B. Fordham Institute invite you to join us for an important discussion about women in education leadership. The event, Breaking Through: Shattering the Glass Ceiling for Female Chiefs, will be held Tuesday, April 9, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at the Renaissance Washington, DC Downtown Hotel. Please see the following for a link to RSVP as well as a list of speakers, including former New Mexico Governor Susana Martinez and a panel moderated by Erica Green of The New York Times.

Far too few women, and women of color, are leading K–12 school systems. Although women make up the vast majority of the education workforce, most leaders in our school districts and state agencies are white men. This is not merely a problem of fairness, of representation, or of opportunity. It is a crisis that can affect America’s students, as systems overlook and reject some of the most qualified candidates. Changing this will require intentionally remaking systems that long ago put men in charge of women, not by happenstance, but by design.

In politics, we’ve been talking a lot about the “Year of the Woman,” but in education, women are still underrepresented at the highest levels of leadership. New research from Chiefs for Change shows that in the districts where we work, women hold the vast majority of jobs from teaching through the superintendent’s cabinet—but then hit a glass ceiling.

Chiefs for Change is working to change this. The Future Chiefs Program is helping to build a diverse pipeline of qualified candidates ready to become superintendents or state chiefs. Diversity by every description matters, and we seek to explore the challenges faced by women leaders—and women leaders of color in particular. We look forward to celebrating the fourth cohort of Future Chiefs at the event on April 9 and hope you will join us in this important mission to diversify education leadership.
