Course Description:

This is a comprehensive two-day workshop directed is primarily at speech-language pathologists and other allied health professionals that diagnose and treat feeding, swallowing, and communication disorders and want to understand how oral dysfunction impacts feeding, articulation, language, and pragmatics. Medical-based SLPs will learn how orofacial myofunctional disorders (OMDs) are the nexus of craniofacial structure, swallowing, and communication. School-based SLPs will learn how to support children with OMDs in an academic environment and advocate for medical speech pathology services. Oromyofunctional goals, objectives, and strategies will be taught for a wide variety of patients across the lifespan. Case studies will be featured.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Outline and describe the structural, functional, and behavioral areas of an OMD assessment.
2. Differentially diagnose OMD from dysphagia, feeding, articulation, and voice disorder.
3. Explain the difference between oromyofunctional goals, objectives, and strategies and how to plan, prioritize, and coordinate treatment.
4. Integrate oromyofunctional therapy (OMT) into current caseloads.
5. Review the evidence base and justify treatment options using the latest clinical research.

About the Presenter:

Linda D’Onofrio, MS, CCC-SLP (linda@donofrioslp.com) has a private practice in Portland Oregon specializing in craniofacial disorders, oromyofunctional disorders, dysphagia, and sensory-motor speech disorders. She completed her Masters in Communication Disorders at the University of Oregon, her medical externship at the Oregon Health Sciences University Medical Center with a focus on inpatient neurological acute care and outpatient cognitive rehabilitation, and her clinical fellowship at the Oregon VA Medical Center with a focus on dysphagia,aphasia, brain injury, and cancer. She is a past president of the Oregon Speech-Language Hearing Association, and she presents internationally on craniofacial development and function.
