Event description

Description

When General Gordon Granger came to deliver the news of emancipation to the slaves in Galveston, TX, most were still working in the fields. He nailed General Order No. 3 to the door post of Reedy Chapel AME Church so that all who came there would know and spread the news.

Today the church is still a central part of the Juneteenth Celebration because worship is a grateful expression of freedom and the first reaction when the prayers of many generations was answered. In remembrance of that first freed man’s church service, we established the Lillian Bush Memorial Juneteenth Ecumenical Breakfast of Prayer Service to honor the lives of all people, no matter their race or denomination, who gave of themselves for the cause of liberty.
