“Fitting & Managing the Post Surgical Cornea”

The concept of using rigid contact lenses to mask corneal irregularity has been a concept for over 100 years. For the majority of those years, the practical application of rigid lenses has been limited due to limitations in lens material, fitting approaches, manufacturing techniques and post-lens wear management of the physiological effect of lens wear. With the advent of gas permeable lens materials in the mid-1980's rigid lens application for myopic and astigmatic cornea's increased. With the relatively recent development of high oxygen permeable lens materials and precision lens lathing / manufacturing techniques the utilization of rigid lenses for the diseased, post-surgical, and post-trauma cornea patient has exploded. Today, most rigid lens laboratories offer one or more mini-scleral lens choices to the practitioner who is motivated to provide specialty services to the growing number of patients who struggle with irregular corneal surfaces. The purpose of this course is to help the practitioner identify, counsel, fit, manage, and monitor mini-scleral lens wear for patient success. The presenters will review several mini-scleral lens design differences, lens handling techniques, lens fitting characteristics, and monitorsof patient success. Multiple challenging cases will be presented and discussed to demonstrate the possible success in fitting min-scleral lenses. Real-time lens insertion & removal and fit assessment will be included in the program.
