Description

INTERESTED IN LEARNING BRAZILIAN ZOUK?!

This beautiful partner dance has been growing in popularity both in the DC area and around the world. Learn the fundamentals with District Zouk's Casi Collins & Michael Garcia. This progressive series will cover zouk foundations and prepare you to get out on the dance floor.

Wednesdays at DanceSport Dupont Circle
7:00-8:15pm
6-week series
September 20 - October 25

Each week will build on what you learned the previous week. Topics will include:

  • Connection
  • Basic steps
  • Lateral
  • Turn technique
  • Traveling
  • Body movement

These classes will provide a good foundation for dancers new to Brazilian zouk and the opportunity for experienced zouk dancers to refine their fundamentals. The small class environment will allow for personal attention and a cohort to learn with as you explore this dance.

Enrollment:

  • $72 for the 6-week series (just $12 per class)
  • No partner required (but you can encourage your friends to sign-up too!)
  • When purchasing your ticket we ask you to decide if you'd like to lead or follow in the classes. We may switch roles at certain times, but would like to try to keep the lead/follow ratio fairly even.

The Instructors:

Casi Collins began her dance career strong with a pair of Barney printed tights, a 3 inch vertical leap, and a passion for performing. Throughout her young life she continued to dance, adding different genres including jazz, tap, hip hop, ballet, pointe, and contemporary. She began her college years as a student in musical theatre at Catholic University, and became a member of the Catholic University Modern Dance Team. After a few year hiatus for education she reconnected with a new dance- Salsa. Salsa was her gateway to zouk, a dance she has been studying intensively for the past two years and is excited to share with anyone who will listen.

Michael Garcia started out as a salsa dancer in 2008 after a knee injury sidelined his college football scholarship aspirations. What initially started out as a new form of exercise quickly turned into an addiction as he grew to appreciate the multiple instruments and musicality, as well as turn patterns salsa offers. After moving to DC in 2012 and a second knee surgery, Michael discovered zouk through a random video shared by an old salsa friend. He immediately fell in love with the connection, complexity, and need of musicality to create movement. Michael began practicing with District Zouk in 2015. You will often find him at workshops - the tall one with the notebook.
