Event description
Biological Control of Brazilian Pepper

About this Event

Using Brazilian peppertree biological control agents are a new, innovative way of managing invasive Brazilian peppertrees in central and south Florida. USDA recently approved the release of a thrips insect (Pseudophilothrips ichini) and one galling insect (Calophya latiforceps) for biological control of Brazilian peppertree. A team of UF research and extension experts will be conducting a presentation and field demonstration on April 9, 2020 at the UF/IFAS Extension Brevard County showcasing the use of biological control for Brazilian peppertree management. The UF/IFAS Extension Brevard County is located at 3695 lake Drive, Cocoa, FL 32926. The three-hour program begins at 9:30 a.m. The intended audience includes cattle ranchers, licensed pesticide applicators/land managers, UF/IFAS faculty and volunteers. The general public is invited to participate. Biological control agents will be dispersed on site during the program. Insects will not be distributed offsite at this time.

Brazilian peppertree is a common invasive plant found throughout central and south Florida. In the Florida Everglades, it is the most widely distributed and abundant invasive species occupying 30,379 ha. Brazilian peppertree is listed as a prohibited plant on the Federal Noxious Weed List, the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS) 5B-64.011 Prohibited Aquatic Plants, and FDACS 5B-57.007 Noxious Weed List. Traditional management techniques are available for use. UF/IFAS experts will be teaching land managers how to incorporate the use of biological control in their Brazilian peppertree integrated pest management plans.
